I was drawn to this moment because of the strange contrast happening within it—two people locked in an intimate embrace, while behind them, a bright blue bus stop ad cheerfully asks, “Just checking in… how are YOU doing?” with cartoon characters smiling wide. It’s one of those everyday juxtapositions that feel almost too perfectly ironic, like the world itself is playing along.
There’s something ambiguous about the hug—are they reuniting, or saying goodbye? Is this a moment of comfort or desperation? The public setting adds another layer, making what should be a private moment feel exposed, even vulnerable. Meanwhile, the puppets in the background seem to be witnessing it all, their exaggerated expressions unintentionally adding humor or maybe even a little unease.
I like painting moments like this—where real emotions exist alongside the absurdity of the world around us. Because sometimes, life does check in on us, just not in the way we expect.
